The Many Hats of Isolde
Veterinarian by Day, Photographer by Passion, Human by Design
As an Associate Photographer in Peter Hurley's Headshot Crew, I am proud to be in an elite group of headshot specialists from all over the world. We are highly trained in the finer nuances of creating a great headshot with fewer than 200 associate photographers achieving the status. As a global community, we meet 3-5 times a week to talk about the finer nuances of headshot photography, business ideas and coach up newer photographers on the Hurley Recipe for an amazing headshot.
I spend a lot of time on my computer, from editing photos to AI website design to running my small business. I was a Philosophy of Science major at UPenn back in the 90's and find it very cool how all those logic and computer science classes are coming in handy 35 years later! And what's so amazing is well have a very powerful camera built into our phones.
My daughter calls me a "Content Creator" - Hustling a small business requires a good deal of marketing through social media, online client meetings, podcasts and speaking engagements. I love sharing what I know to help others not make all the same mistakes I have.
My favorite horse show to attend is right in my back yard: The Devon Horse Show & County Fair. The Largest all breed outdoor horse show, running for over 150 years in late May every year. On Ladies Day, the second of the show, my best friend of over 20 years and fellow volunteer and I wear pretty dresses & fancy hats, with a gourmet picnic in the grandstands.
Travel is a big part of the rhythm in our home - from packing up to explore distant castles, to trade shows across the United States or on-location team photoshoots in the Greater Philadelphia Region. I love exploring new places and meeting new people. The tradeshow booths are like Speed Dating: tyring to make an instant connection so the whole process of getting a great photo is less painful.
I love the Beach. Sitting watching the ocean, listening to the waves - the sun, the sand, the breezes all make me happy. Many family beach days have been spent at our condo in Atlantic City NJ : watching my girls grow up playing in the sand, defending castles from the high tide waves and now 25 years later doing the same with my young nieces and nephews.
Every morning, I have my coffee on the back porch - no matter the weather! Rain, Snowstorms, Summer heat: I've sat out in it all. Usually spending 30-40 minutes to start my day on the right now, reading, journalling and planning. On our adventures I don't pack light often taking my travel espresso machine and air fryer wherever we go!
I have been riding for over 35 years. It all started as a club activity when I was a freshman in college - 6 equine family members and lifetime later, I still love spending time at the barn. The connection between horse and rider is like no other
I learned to knit as a tween, in girl scouts circa 1977, then rediscovering knitting in my 30s. My mother and many of my Irish relations all knit too - I love the rhythm of the activity and the math behind the creation. My favorite fibers are Silk, Alpaca, Merino wool.
My days in the veterinary hospital are usually in the procedure room. I help a handful of clinics the suburban Philadelphia region with GP surgeries and dentals and the occasional ER shift. I especially love helping dogs and cats feel so much better by cleaning up their periodontal disease.
I started swimming during my first year in vet school, as a stress reliever from the intense course work. I still remember how hard it was to learn to swim efficiently and do a Flip turn as an adult. One of my favorite places is the 50 Meter outdoor pool at the Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn PA. I try to work out 3-5 times a week in the pool and Whenever I travel, I take my suit and goggles and find a pool to get my laps in.
Both my daughters were active in athletics: swimming, horse back riding, track, cross country, crew, now triathlon and 1/2 marathons. I spent many hours watching practice or events or waiting in the car. Music, crossword puzzles, reading and knitting all helped my pass the time. U2 is my favorite band and I've seen them on every tour since following them around Europe for the Joshua Tree tour in 1987.
I got my start with photography actually in an animal hospital. I was always a mom with a nice camera: one day we decided to take photos of pets in holiday costumes as benefit for a local rescue. Soon people started hopping in front of my camera and a side gig was born.
Three Worlds, One Thread
I spent 30 years in emergency veterinary medicine before picking up a camera. Not the usual path to headshot photography, but the operating room taught me things no photography school could: how to read people in seconds, how to keep someone calm when they'd rather be anywhere else, and how to work with precision under pressure. Turns out those skills translate pretty directly to getting a great expression out of someone who hates having their picture taken.
Photography started as an accident at a pet costume fundraiser. Someone's mom hopped in front of my camera, then a colleague, then a friend's law firm. Somewhere in there I trained with Peter Hurley's Headshot Crew and realized I was building something real. Today, Images by IBA is the top-rated headshot studio in the Philadelphia region, with 174 five-star Google reviews and more than 5,500 professionals photographed.
Along the way I also built Scooter, a veterinary workflow app born out of years of watching vets drown in paperwork. And I co-founded Power of Pacing with my husband, a stress management coaching program for veterinary professionals. Three different worlds, but they all come from the same place: I see a problem, I build a solution, and I try to make other people's lives a little easier in the process.
